The plumb line, as a biblical metaphor, helps us come to grips
with the absolute terms of God’s authority. You don't argue with
a plumb line. You simply conform to it. In the Old Testament (Amos
7:7; Isaiah 28:17), the plumb line depicted impending judgement:
times of reckoning, destruction, and purging, when God lined His
people up against the yardstick of His holiness. But the plumb line
also presaged grace and hope, because for those who obeyed, God
promised restoration and renewal...rebuilding according to His own
standards (Isaiah 28:16).
The Plumb Line is the ministry of a small group of ordinary Christians.
The name of this paper stems from our deep desire to lift the Bible
up as the infallible Word of God, and thus our absolute standard
for Christian living; the Bible also offers hope for renewal as
we align all of our lives to its wisdom and direction. The Plumb
Line is dedicated to two basic purposes: to maintain a prophetic
voice for our times, and to challenge Christians everywhere to appropriate
their calling as God’s royal priests. The first purpose means that
we will try to expose current thinking, trends, and social structures
(both in and out of institutionalized Christianity) to the test
of Scriptures; and the second purpose means that we want to bring
biblical principles into the everyday arena of practical discipleship.
Readers’ response in any form will be seriously considered. We welcome
encouragement, suggestions, admonition, criticisms,…anything that
will help The Plumb Line evolve into a useful channel for mutual
teaching and up-building. For obvious reasons, we cannot print everything
we receive, and maintain editorial rights over all correspondences.
The Plumb Line is produced quarterly and circulated privately on
request.
